CDG's

1) What is a "CDG" anyway?

"CDG" stands for "Compact Disc & Graphics". This is the standard format for Karaoke music. The disc audio is identical to standard CDs yet have the additional graphics track that allows you to read the song lyrics on a connected TV or monitor.

When played on a CDG player, the words to the song will be displayed on your TV screen and change color in time to sing those lyrics.

2) Do I need a Karaoke player?

Yes. A karaoke machine is a CD player with the added function of "CD+G graphic output." This allows you to play Karaoke CDG discs in the player and connect the player to your television (or a video monitor) to see the lyrics of the songs as you sing them.

Sunfly makes its own brand of Karaoke player which is compatible with all formats.

3) Will CDG play on my CD player, DVD player or computer?

Yes, the actual music will play in any CD player, DVD player, or personal computer.

BUT, to see the lyrics and / or graphics, you need a Karaoke CDG player. Some disc drives on PC's also do work, but a majority of them do not. We do not recommend any particular brand.

4) Is there software to play CDGs on my computer?
Yes, but once again, most CDrom drives will not read the special graphic information needed to see the words on your screen. There have been programs made for this, but it doesnt guarantee that it will work on your PC.

5) Is this the original music?
No. Karaoke music is not the original music. The songs have been re-recorded by the companies to get as close to the original as possible.

6) Will the karaoke recordings have "background vocals"? And can they be removed?
Almost all songs will have background singers, especially in the chorus and they are not removable.

7) How do I know what key the song is recorded in?
Generally, the song is recorded in the key that the artist recorded it in.

Some Karaoke players have Key Changer functions, and thus it can manually be done without affecting the speed or tempo of the song.

8) Do I need a Karaoke player to play CDG's?
Yes, if you want to see the song lyrics. All Karaoke discs are made with a special track that contains the song lyrics on the disc. When a Karaoke disc is played on a Karaoke player, which is connected to any regular TV, the song lyrics are displayed on the TV. The words to the song are typically displayed on a blue background and are highlighted in a contrasting color to signal when the words should be sung.

PIRACY

1) As an employer of a karaoke show, why should I care if they are using copied discs?

You should care because if they are found using copied discs they are breaking the law and also they will have equipment and all discs taken from them. It can also affect you as you are the employer. Be careful.

2) I have a vast CDG collection. Is it legal to copy my discs, use the copies and keep my originals in the safe. I am a pro KJ.

This is TOTALLY ILLEGAL. The practice of backing up your discs (whilst it makes complete sense to do so) is illegal and risks a fine or a prison term.... Copying karaoke / music cds from one media to another for any reason is illegal.
